Currently, her role focuses on marine spatial planning practices in the Philippines, and building the capacity of civil society organisations to use spatially explicit data to help better manage their marine and maritime resources. Her research background is in fish ecology and coral reef ecology, and her PhD at James Cook University explored the effects of multiple non-reef habitats on coral reef fishes. She used a combination of field surveys, fish collections, stable isotope analysis, remote sensing, and spatial analysis to explore how fishes are influenced by multiple habitats in the surrounding seascape. Her PhD work was conducted in the beautiful location of the Visayan region of the Philippines. This involves gaining insight into how locally relevant hazards may affect community livelihoods in order to develop adaptation strategies around community needs, aspirations, and desired development outcomes. Bethany additionally works as a research consultant at the International Water Management Institute, where she supports land use suitability for integrated aquatic food production systems across Southeast Asia. Her research seeks to help coastal communities navigate just and sustainable futures by understanding how moral values shape adaptation to environmental change. Her DECRA project will investigate the role of morality in decisions about environmental change along the Great Barrier Reef coast. Jacqui’s research is interdisciplinary and draws together a range of social science disciplines—including human geography, development studies, sociology, and conservation.
